On Being a Writer in a Visually Dominated Space

I have a confession to make: I take in way more drawn artwork than I do written works despite being a writer myself. My ADHD discourages reading and even writing, and it takes effort to ramp up to concentrated reading or creation time. I also have been practicing drawing on occasion and would like to get better at it. It’s fun having a creative outlet that you can utilize while chatting with others or while listening to music, as with writing doing either can be strongly distracting.

It can be quite demoralizing as a writer, as you can spend hours on a new piece only for it to fall by the wayside of people’s attention. Even as an ‘established’ writer, a lot of my popularity is only glimpsed in download numbers, not in comments, feedback, or even social media likes. As such, I see many writers, both new and established, teeter on the brink of quitting because of lack of feedback. Charging money for writing can have its place, but it still doesn’t give the encouragement a creative needs to keep making things at a core level.

Even considering all of this, I find writing to be immensely rewarding. Its strengths lie in the very same facets that make it harder to engage with; it requires the imagination of the reader to be active. This means writers have powerful tools to express change, growth, and inner thoughts in an economical word count, as well as quickly set grandiose scenes that would take ages to artistically reproduce for just one frame. Skillful description can bring the wildest fantasies to life that work with a reader’s imagination instead of against it, allowing them to fill in the gaps with their idealized depictions of what’s happening in the story.

It’s for these reasons that I’m quite proud to be a writer. I lean into bespoke and niche topics that blend kinks and go into fine detail about the characters’ headspaces. Even through a tumultuous few years, it’s earned me truly loyal readers who care about my well being, and I am working hard to start to be worthy of such care and attention.

For any aspiring or discouraged writers, I wish to express that creating in this medium means honing your diligence and patience. Try and read other writers’ work and feed back; you’ll undoubtedly make their day.
